Friday August 4

Just the hits. Your recap of the week plus what to watch this weekend

Happy Friday people! It’s August and we’re officially in Fantasy Football draft month — I hope everyone can keep the number of leagues they are in to a minimum this year, lord knows I won’t.

Enjoy.

MLB

  • Framber Valdez throws a no-hitter for the Houston Astros on Tuesday

  • With the extra wild card spot on the table and 20 teams in post season contention, here’s how the MLB standings look right now. The Oakland A’s take the last place spot with a 30-79 record and the Atlanta Braves stay on top with a record of 69-37

GOLF

  • Tiger Woods was named as a Player Director for PGA Tour policy board on Tuesday and he’s already shaking things up. He convinced the Tour to bring back cuts for the Genesis Invitational and the Memorial events, which he and Jack Nicklaus host. The Tour listened and made the change, showing how quickly Woods is making an impact in his new role. Rory McIlroy, also disagreed with the no-cut idea, while pee-wee Patrick Cantlay preferred having the best players around for all four days

NFL

  • Wild stats from Derrick Henry here

  • The NFL is looking into the XFL's kickoff strategy to make kickoffs safer. The XFL kicks from the 30-yard line, and players bunch up at the receiving team's 35-yard line. Only the kicker and returner can move until the ball's caught. It's supposed to limit big hits and head injuries. Right now, they're testing a new fair catch rule for 2023, but they're still looking for a better fix

What do you think the NFL should do about kickoffs?

NBA

  • Former NBA player Terrence Williams has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for orchestrating a $5 million fraud scheme targeting the NBA health and welfare benefit plan. He recruited others to make fake medical claims, impersonated a plan employee, and threatened witnesses. Williams pleaded guilty to fraud and identity theft, and must pay $3.1 million in restitution. He was also jailed for intimidating a witness.

OTHER SPORTS

  • Cycling: Promising 17-year-old cyclist Magnus White died in a collision with a vehicle during a training ride near Boulder, Colorado. Magnus was a rising star in cycling, he won the junior national championship in 2021 and was set to compete in world championships.
