MNML Sports Newsletter Friday June 23

Only the hits. A Twice-weekly recap of sports news and a preview of upcoming events

Jeez, I thought that it would be a slow week of sports without the NBA and NHL (and considering I only put out the last edition on Tuesday), but boy was I wrong.

This week’s recap:

NBA

  • Get used to pronouncing this man’s name: Victor Wembanyama. The San Antonio Spurs get the best prospect since Lebron James in the first pick of the NBA Draft

  • Marcus Smart and Kristaps Porzingis get dished — Three way trade between Celtics, Wizards, Grizzlies

NFL

  • Miami Dolphins wide-receiver, Tyreek Hill, could be facing charges and NFL punishment for assault and battery of a marina worker.

NHL

  • That Middle East money is endless. Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund could soon own a stake in Monumental Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Washington Wizards (NBA), Washington Mystic (WNBA) and Washington Capitals (NHL)

MLB

  • AL Standings: Tampa Bay Rays stay 5 games ahead of Baltimore Orioles in the East, Minnesota Twins 1 game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians in AL Central, Texas Rangers 5.5 games ahead of Houston Astros in the West

  • NL Standings: Atlanta Braves 6.5 games ahead of Miami Marlins in the East, Cincinnati Reds 1.5 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers in Central, Arizona Diamondbacks 3.5 games ahead of San Francisco Giants in the West

  • Confusion and frustration continue with the MLB’s rule against blocking the plate. I am definitely confused after watching this most recent call.

GOLF

  • PGA Tour - Travelers Championship: The boys go low again with over 600 birdies made yesterday alone. Denny “the Grand Slam” McCarthy starts us off hot with a 60. Adam Scott was on pace for a 59 with two holes to play until he double bogeyed, then almost holes out to save the 59 (we’ve all been there) | Friday 3-6pm ET on Golf Channel, Saturday + Sunday 1-3pm ET on Golf Channel, 3-6pm ET on CBS

  • Rory McIlroy gets his first PGA Tour hole-in-one

OTHER

  • Walk-off for the LSU Tigers in the bottom of the 11th inning to send LSU to the College World Series Finals

  • What. A. Play. LSU First baseman, Tre’ Morgan with an incredible play to help keep the game scoreless

  • Potentially on the way out before the season - UConn’s head coach, Dan Hurley, gets paid and rightfully so after delivering UConn their 5th National Championship this year

  • Former NFL superstar and current University of Colorado head football coach, Deion Sanders, does not need his foot amputated after a scare last week and other amputations in the past. He will undergo surgery to repair blood clots in both legs among other injuries.

  • Soccer in America will never be the same”. An interesting piece about just how big of an impact Messi’s arrival will have in Miami, the MLS and soccer in America

THINGS TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND

  • College World Series Final: Florida Gators vs LSU Tigers | Game One - Saturday @ 7pm ET on ESPN, Sunday @ 7pm ET on ESPN

  • UFC Jacksonville: Featherweight Main Card: Josh Emmett (+240) vs. Ilia Topuria (-300) | Saturday, Prelims @ 11:30am ET on ESPN/ESPN+, Main Card 3pm ET on ABC/ESPN+

  • LPGA - Women’s PGA Championship: Catch Rose Zhang (currently T-12), the 20 year-old out of Stanford, who won her LPGA debut last week. The first woman to do that on the LPGA since 1951 | Friday on Peacock, Saturday + Sunday on NBC
