Just the hits. Your weekend sports recap

Happy Monday — After a brief hiatus, we are back and ready to give you the sports updated that you absolutely need and nothing else. The bare minimum - enjoy.

This past week/weekend recap:

MLB

  • Home Run Derby: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. follows in his father’s footsteps to win his first Home Run Derby (Vlad Sr. won in ‘04/’07)

  • The MLB made sure to keep tradition alive and allow some lucky kids to field balls in the outfield during the Home Run Derby. Well, when you have the hardest hitters in the world launching balls at pre-teens, you’re bound to have this happen

  • The MLB season is back in action after the All Star break and the hottest team is baseball, the Atlanta Braves, are approaching an MLB record

  • Speaking of hot, Shohei “Show-time” Ohtani is also back just hit his 33rd home run of the season, leading the league UPDATE: since initially writing this, he has hit his 34th

GOLF

  • PGA Tour - Genesis Scottish Open: Rory McIlroy, wins at The Renaissance Club in East Lothian, Scotland, UK. Back to old form, McIlroy was bombing drives and sunk a birdie putt on 18 to seal the deal after a ballsy 2nd shot into the 18th green in breezy conditions

NBA

  • Golden State Warriors star, Steph Curry, continues to be better than you at everything

TENNIS

  • Wimbledon: If you were lucky enough to catch the Men’s Finals yesterday morning, it did not disappoint. The 20 year-old from Spain, Carlos Alcaraz, defeats Novak Djokovic to win his second grand slam and first Wimbledon. An unreal win, even for the world No. 1, to dethrone Djokovic on a grass surface (Djokovic has won the last 4 Wimbledons)

NFL

  • Confirmed good-guy and Cincinnati RB, Joe Mixon, agreed to restructure his contract (aka take a pay cut) in order to allow the team to allocate money to keep players and contend again for a Super Bowl. Nothing new here - players do this all the time but notable here given the devaluation of RBs in the modern NFL
