MNML Sports Newsletter June 12

I do not want to start your Monday with bad news, but the NHL and NBA Finals could be over before the our next newsletter. Luckily, crazy things keep happening in sports to keep us entertained and I’m here to keep you informed.

This weekend’s recap:

NBA FINALS

  • Denver Nuggets vs. Miami Heat: Miami’s three-pointer shot was not on fire and, while Jokic didn’t have his best game, the rest of the Nuggets team was able to handle the Heat with relative ease. We could see the end of the NBA season tonight as they head back to Denver | Game 5 tonight @ 8:30pm ET on ABC

  • UFC Champion, Connor McGregor, accidentally injured the Miami Heat mascot in an on-court skit. It’s actually surprising this doesn’t happen more often. Luckily, the person behind the mask was released from the ER with minor injuries.

NHL STANLEY CUP FINALS

  • Vegas Golden Knights vs. Florida Panthers: Vegas again gained and held control for most of the game. The meow meows were able to score 2 in a row and had a chance for a game tying goal right before the final horn. Vegas will have the chance to seal the series at home | Game 5 on Tuesday @ 8pm ET on TNT

GOLF

  • RBC Canadian Open: Wow. In the 4th playoff hole versus Tommy Fleetwood, Nick Taylor sinks a 72-foot walk-off birdie putt to win the event. The No. 69 player in the world wins $1.6 million in dramatic fashion

  • To add to the drama, Adam Hadwin gets mistaken for a fan while trying to celebrate his friends win and gets tackled by security. A crazy scene.

OTHER SPORTS UPDATES

  • French Open: History made. I was not expecting to be crowning a new GOAT this weekend but here we are. Novak Djokovic is the best player in men’s tennis, ever. The 36 year-old Serbian won the French Open yesterday morning and wiped the floor with xxx Ruud. With that, Novak wins his 23rd Grand Slam — the most of any men’s tennis player ever and even with Serena Williams.

  • Belmont Stakes: Arcangelo wins the 2023 Belmont Stakes. Much of the news, though, has been focused on the two horses that died during the races. More history made as Arcangelo’s trainer, Jena Antonucci, becomes the first female trainer to have a winning horse at Belmont in it’s 155-year history

  • UFC 298: Amanda Nunes secures a bantamweight title by an easy unanimous decision and then retires in the post-fight interview. Charles Oliveira wins in dominant fashion just over 4 minutes into round one.
