This weekend’s sports news and what to watch this week

Happy Monday! We're deep into the dog days of summer, and the sports news from the weekend has been light. However, with the Olympics kicking off this Friday, there's plenty to look forward to. In the meantime, here's a roundup of this weekend's highlights and what to watch for in the coming week.

GOLF

Xander Schauffele wins the Open Championship with a final-round 65, finishing at 9-under. This is his second major win in three months, following his PGA Championship victory. He held off Billy Horschel and Justin Rose by two strokes, with Thriston Lawrence another stroke back. This marks the seventh consecutive major win by an American golfer, the longest streak since 1977.

MLB

On Sunday, the 2024 Baseball Hall of Fame welcomed the new class of inductees including Adrian Beltre, Joe Mauer, Todd Helton, and Jim Leyland.

USA BASKETBALL

Team USA narrowly defeated South Sudan 101-100 in a challenging exhibition game, overcoming a 16-point deficit. For the record, South Sudan has no current NBA players on the team. Team USA clearly needs to up their game heading into the Olympics.
